that will teach me to speak too soon :(

So I spoke too soon...and I'm all over the place again...no bowel control, though I have to say, it's not as bad as it was last year. So what the heck do I do now. The preds aren't working and I'm at a lose. I'm going ot taper the preds out over the next 4 weeks and to see exactly how bad this is ... if anyone has got any better ideas, please let me know.

And I've found another thing to try...heck...why not...so now I'm on a daily dose of cabbage or cabbage juice ... yep, I was suprised at the one too. Google it's benefits if you don't believe. One week into it, so who knows...I'll give it a few months and see if there are any benefits and let you know.

  1. I was just wondering what you were up to this last couple weeks. Sorry to hear it's not great conditions :(
I don't know if it'll work for for you, but daily I take fish oil and a probiotic called Sustenex (I find it at Walgreens in the US; I'm not sure where you might find it, except online). I've also given up most dairy products because it DESTROYS me, so I supplement with calcium too. My point is, before I was on Sufasalazine (6 per day currently), I was surviving on these pills alone. They might alleviate a little bit of the trouble; I swore by the probiotic (until it couldn't handle the job alone anymore), and still take it with my other stuff. I've also heard great things about cabbage juice. Still haven't tried it.
Sending good thoughts your way. You'll make it through this.

  2. Paula,

How frustrating that is, I experienced such things myself. It's really difficult.

So I'm really hoping the cabbage is THE thing for you.

    Don't give up.

BTW - like your new blog style. Really good.

  3. Hi guys and on top of the bloddy UC, I killed my brand new apple mac with a cup of tea...don't ask...it was just one of those things and I was helping someone and that involved me moving my laptop to somewhere it shouldn't have been....gutted...anyway, back to cabbage ...did you google it's benefits? I was amazed at what i read in relation to UC and cancer prevention. So at least if it doesn't fix the UC, it might keep the cancer at bay ...and I found I actually quite like cabbage :D ... God, I used to hate that stuff as a kid ......

  4. Hi Paula, I'm very sorry to hear this! What dose of prednisone were you on when you flared? I hope the cabbage helps some. It definitely wouldn't be a good idea for me--eating cabbage is what triggered the flare up that got me diagnosed. (But I later went to my allergist for testing and tested positive for cabbage allergy.)

  5. Woahhh! That must be sooo annoying. I live in mac land and that would really make me feel like screaming.

Now the kind red cabbage in your picture I like, especially chopped up small in a salad. Green cabbage cooked not too much, and with butter on - that's good too. I also like red pickled cabbage such as you find in eastern European shops.

But before my op all of these were well out of the frame for me.

I'm with you - as a kid it was indescribably disgusting.

  6. Hey Paula. I'm sorry to hear that you have been having a rough time with your UC. It has been a good while since I have been on here. We had our first baby in July! He is doing well and has been a great joy to us.

All that to say, I have been out of the loop these past few months. I plan on posting some updates in the days ahead. I have just got out of the hospital due to a flare. Here we go again with the prednisone and meds that don't work. I was at 2.5 and almost done but now I am back to 60mg daily. I have to keep reminding myself that I am healthy more often than I am sick, and that this too shall pass. Believe me, that has been a struggle as of late. Many tears of frustration, humiliation, and discouragement have been shed in weeks past due to this latest flare. Hope your getting better and I plan to update more in days ahead. Take care.
